MINERALOGICAL SOCIETY, fully named the All-Russian Mineralogical Society, situated at 2 Twenty-First Line of Vasilievsky Island, one of the oldest mineralogical societies in the world. It was founded in 1817 as the Petersburg Mineralogical Society with Member of the Academy V. M. Severgin and Professor D. I. Sokolov among its founding members. Named the Russian Mineralogical Society from 1919 and All-Union Mineralogical Society from 1947, it received its present-day name in 1991. The society's objectives are to contribute to the development of geological and mineralogical sciences and productive resources of Russia and to strengthen these links with geological exploration. It united about 1,700 people in 2001 with more than 30 branches in Russian cities. With a congress as its superior body, the society also has an Academic Council and Presidium acting between congresses, both situated in St. Petersburg. Presidents and directors of the society were: N. I. Koksharov from 1865, P. V. Eremeev from 1892, A. P. Karpinsky from 1899, A. P. Gerasimov from 1937, S. S. Smirnov from 1945, A. N. Zavaritsky from 1947, V. A. Nikolaev from 1952, A. G. Betekhtin in 1960, P. M. Tatarinov from 1962, A. V. Sidorenko in 1976-82, and D. V. Rundquist from 1987. The society was a founding member of the International Mineralogical Association and has been a part of it since 1958. The society has a number of scientific committees. It has been publishing Notes since 1866 and various thematic collections since 1972.
