NAVAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, St. Petersburg State Naval Technical University, situated at 3 Lotsmanskaya Street and 101 Leninsky Avenue. Founded in 1930 as Shipbuilding Institute on the basis of the shipbuilding department of the Polytechnical Institute, it received its present-day name in 1991. Among the teachers and researchers who worked at the university were K. P. Boklevsky, I. G. Bubnov, I. N. Voskresensky, A. N. Krylov, et al. It had the following departments in 2002: shipbuilding and ocean technology, marine power engineering and automatic machinery, marine instrument-making, natural science and humanitarian subjects, economics, evening and correspondence courses, special contract training and additional vocational education, military training, secondary technical education, and a private education department, the latter providing education paid for by the student and giving an opportunity to receive a second major in law or economics in two to three years in addition to basic education. Accelerated study is also allowed. The university is the leading Russian institution providing training for shipbuilding engineers, its specialists are certified by the Institute of Marine Engineers, Great Britain.
