KOMOROVSKOE CEMETERY (Komarovo village) is situated in resort area near St. Petersburg, five kilometres from Komarovo Railway Station, on the road to Shchuchye Lake, and not bigger than a hectare. The region has been in use since the 1910s; burials began in the 1950s. Besides the locals Leningrad scientists, literary and artistic figures were buried at Komorovskoe Cemetery due to its location to the holiday villages of the Academy of Sciences, Litfond (a foundation to assist writers), artistic houses and private summer residences of the Leningrad intelligentsia. In 1966, A.A. Akhmatova was buried there (the tomb made by sculptor A.M. Ignatyev). About 40 full members and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences are buried at the cemetery. Toropov, V.A. Fok, chemists A.A. Grinberg, geologist D.V. Nalivkin, oncologist N.N. Petrov, polar explorers M.M. Somov, A.F. Treshnikov, chief engineer of the atomic icebreaker A.E. Perevozchikov, artist N.I. Altman, film director I.S. Aranovich, N.B. Birman, N.N. Koshaverova, I.E. Heifits, composer V.E. Basner, producer and pedagogue A.I. Katzman, writers B.B. Vakhtin, L.Y. Ginzburg, A.I. Gitovich, I.A. Efremov, V.F. Panova, M.L. Slonimsky, V.V. Toropygin, ballerina T.M. Vecheslova, musician S.A. Kuryekhin and many others.
