SLONIMSKY Mikhail Leonidovich (1897, St. Petersburg - 1972, Leningrad), writer. He graduated from the Fourth Classic (Larinskaya) Gymnasium (15 Sixth Line of Vasilievsky Island), and went to the front line as a volunteer in 1915. From 1916 served in Petrograd, where he took part in the February Revolution of 1917 as a soldier. In 1918 he was attached to People's Commissariat for Education, and in 1919 moved to the World Literature publishing house after acquaintance with M. Gorky. His room at the House of Arts, which he occupied in 1920-22, hosted the meetings of the literary group Serapion Brothers. The artistic principles of this association exerted a notable influence on the poetic style of Slonimsky. A lot of his work was editoria, connected with a series of journals and publishing houses, the Kovsh almanac, Leningrad journal etc.; he was active at the Surf Publishing House, Leningrad Department of the State Publishing House, Writers of Leningrad Publishing House, Leningrad Department of Soviet Writers' Publishing House etc.); another significant aspect of Slonimsky's activity was his fruitful work with novice writers at Leningrad literary associations. The best works of Slonimsky were written in the 1920s (collection of stories, Sixth Rifle Battalion, 1922; novel The Lavrovs, 1926; narrative Sredny Avenue, 1927, etc.); it was also the time when the subject of Petrograd - Leningrad acquired a decisive importance in his works. His Book of Reminiscences (1966), comprising vivid images of many Leningrad writers, was a notable success. While studying, Slonimsky lived at 4/58 Maly Avenue of Vasilievsky Island, in 1927-35 he lived at 3 Marata Street, then in 1935-41 and 1953-72 he resided at 9 Griboedova Canal Embankment (collective memorial plaque). He was buried at Komarovskoe cemetery.
