2ND STRIKE ARMY, an armed forces unit of the USSR. Formed in December 1941 along the Volkhov Front for offensive action, to break through the Siege of Leningrad. In January – July 1942, during the Lyuban Offensive, it was encircled and defeated. In the summer of 1942, it was reformed. It took part in the Third Sinyavino Operation, playing a major role in action along the Volkhov Front during the Lifting of the Leningrad Siege (January 1943). In February – April 1943, it held the line south of Schlisselburg; from May, it was transferred to the Leningrad Front reserves. In November 1943 — January 1944, the unit moved to the Oranienbaum Bridgehead. Along with the 42nd Army, it played a major role in the Lifting of the Siege. In the summer of 1944, it operated as part of the main attack in Estonia. From October 1944, it was sent to the 2nd Byelorussian Front. In 1945, it conducted offensives in Poland, East Prussia and Pomerania. The 2nd Strike Army was lead by Lieutenant General G.G. Sokolov (until January 1942); Lieutenant General N.K. Klykov (until April and from July to December 1942); Lieutenant General A.A. Vlasov (April–July 1942); Lieutenant General V.Z. Romanovsky (December 1942 — December 1943); and Lieutenant General, then Colonel-General I.I. Fedyuninsky (until 1945).
