Malaya Konyushennaya Street

Categories / City Topography/Urban Network/Streets

MALAYA KONYUSHENNAYA STREET (in the 18th century Rozhdestvenskaya Street, in 1918-91 Sofia Perovskaya Street), located between Nevsky Prospect and Shvedsky Lane, laid out in the 1760s as a passageway to the Court Stables (hence the name). Its second name commemorated S. L. Perovskaya. The Swedish Church of St. Catherine (house No 1) was built in 1862-65, followed in 1904-05 by its apartment house (house No 3), and the so called Catherine Hall (architect F. I. Lidval). The area between Malaya and Bolshaya Konyushennaya Streets, Griboedova Canal, and Swedish Lane, makes up the Court Stable Yard (which was repeatedly rebuilt). Among those who have lived in house No 4/2 are writers V. М. Sayanov, V. Y. Shishkov, O. D. Forsh, and М. М. Zoshchenko (whose apartment houses a memorial museum), as well as other eminent persons. The former St. Peter Lutheran Church Central School was situated in house No 5 (Peterschule). In the 1990s, Malaya Konyushennaya Street was reconstructed and turned into a pedestrian street, its territory refurbished, lined with trees, and set off with a decorative sculpture. O. А. Chekanova.
