RESIDENTIAL BLOCKS, a site development system typical for new city districts built in the 1920-30s. Due to an acute demand for accommodations in the mid-1920s, individual home building was replaced by residential blocks - a new type of city territory site development including public services, parks etc. In the 1920-30s residential blocks were built in the outskirts around workers' settlements, on wastelands and territories adjacent to large enterprises. The development project of the area of Stachek Avenue around Narva Gates was designed in 1924 (architect L. A. Ilyin). The newly laid out Traktornaya Street became the first residential block (1925-27, architects А. S. Nikolsky, А. I. Gegello, G. А. Simonov) with 16 three to four storey buildings. Palevsky residential community (the area around Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue and Elizarova Avenue; architects А. I. Zazersky, N. F. Rybin); the residential community on Tkachey Street (architects L. М. Tverskoy and D. P. Buryshkin), and Utkina Zavod (architect G. D. Grimm) emerged at about the same time. Residential blocks sprang up in the early 1930s around Moskovsky Avenue, Lesnoy Avenue, Kondratyevsky residential district, Krestovsky residential district and others. The General Plan of 1935 set residential blocks as the key elements of Leningrad urban development (which was made possible by the type design of buildings and standardisation of building units). In 1935-40 residential blocks were constructed on Moskovsky Avenue, around Shchemilovka (Ivanovskaya Street), in Avtovo and other parts of the city. See also Large-scale residential development.
