VOEYKOV MAIN GEOPHYSICAL OBSERVATORY, situated at 7 Karbysheva Street, the central research institution conducting research in aerophysics and climatology. It has also been monitoring ambient air pollution in St. Petersburg since 1990. Founded in 1849, it was named the Main Physical Observatory until 1924. It started publishing its weather bulletin in 1872. A Storm Warning Service was founded as part of the observatory in 1874. The observatory has been conducting synoptic research for long-term weather forecasts since 1908. Decreed by the Soviet of People’s Commissars in 1921, it was charged with restoring and developing a service to become the meteorological centre of the country till 1929. The observatory was named after A. I. Voeykov in 1949. The settlement of Seltsy, Vsevolozhsky District of Leningrad Region, where the field base was situated, now acting as an observatory branch, was also renamed as Voeykovo. The observatory was headed by members of the academy including A. Y. Kupfer, the founder and director from 1849, K. S. Veselovsky, H. I. Wild, B. B. Golitsyn, L. M. Kamtz, and M. A.
