KRYLOV Alexey Nikolaevich (1863-1945, Leningrad) was mathematician, naval architect, academician of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1916), of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1917), of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1925), Hero of Socialist Labour (1943). He lived in St. Petersburg from 1878. Krylov graduated from the Shipbuilding Department of the Naval Academy (1890), where he later taught (from 1891, after 1927, he headed the Academy; there is a commemorative plaque in the old building on 2 Admiralteisky Passage, Krylov Working Study museum was opened in the new building at 73/1 Vyborgskaya Embankment in 1988). Krylov also taught at the Naval College from 1890, at the Polytechnic Institute and at other institutions of higher education. In 1900-08, he was in charge of the Experimental Pool for testing ship models (2 Admiralteisky Canal; commemorative plaque). In 1916-21 Krylov headed the Main Physical Observatory and the Main Military Meteorological Administration. In 1917-21 and after 1927, he was director of the Physical Laboratory (later of the Institute of Physics and Mathematics) of the Academy of Sciences. In 1921-27 he worked abroad, later returning to Leningrad. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, he was evacuated to Kazan, later to Moscow; in August 1945 he returned to Leningrad. He wrote on the theory of shipbuilding, mathematics and mechanics. Krylov was awarded the Stalin Prize (1941). In 1937-45, he lived at 5 Universitetskaya Embankment (commemorative plaque). He was buried in Literatorskie Mostki Cemetery. In 1952 Akademika Krylova Street was named in his honour (former Stroganovskaya Street, in Novaya Derevnya). The Central Scientific Research Institute and the Scientific Technical Society of Naval Architects have been named after him, the Naval-Military Academy of Ship Building and Armament which existed in 1945-60 was named after Krylov as well.
