KUEBA (16 Bolshaya Morskaya Street). A restaurant opened in 1887 on the premises of the Cafe de Paris, operating from the 1850s and belonging to restaurateur Z.P. Kueba. It was a luxurious establishment with a high style cuisine and excellent service, catering to guests which including many famous artists, actors, entrepreneurs, as well as Grand Princes. It was a meeting place for balletomanes and the so-called Golden Youth. In 1904, a dinner in honour of American dancer I. Duncan was given at Kueba, and in 1911 the restaurant hosted a dinner in honour of the 20th anniversary of M. F. Kshessinskaya's debut on the Imperial stage. Among its regulars were S.P. Dyagilev, V.F. Nijinsky, F.I. Shalyapin, S.I. Mamontov, T.L. Schepkina-Kupernik, N.K. Schilder. One of the first St. Petersburg electric signs was placed on the roof of the building (Cubat, from which came a pun of that time: "Shining be thy name"). After October 1917, the restaurant was closed down. The Neoclassical gateway, made of green Levantine marble, has been preserved (architect I.A. Fomin).
