BALTIC SHIPPING COMPANY (BSC). The history of BSC (5 Mezhevoy Canal) goes back to the foundation of St. Petersburg-Lubeck Shipping Society in 1830; its present-day name was given in 1922. By 1941 BSC had 20 ships. In 1941 the ships of Latvian and Estonian Shipping Companies were transferred to BSC. Since the beginning of Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 BSC ships co-operated with the Baltic Fleet. In the spring of 1942, many BSC staff who were a part of Northwest River Shipping Company and Ladoga Military Flotilla worked on the so-called Road of Life and in ports of Lake Ladoga. In the spring of 1944, ships of BSC again commenced navigation in the Gulf of Finland and in the autumn of 1944 - in the Baltic Sea. In the beginning of 1945, BSC had 24 ships. By the early 1990s, BSC became a large state self-financing company of marine transport, the biggest of its kind in Russia, handling transportation operations by sea. In 1990, the BSC incorporated 3 ports (in Leningrad, Vyborg, and Kaliningrad), a ship repair station (Kanonersky Ship Repair Plant), a construction and repair trust, a marine school, etc. BSC Fleet counted over 170 transport and cargo-and-passenger superships, and 26 research ships. BSC operated in over 400 ports of 70 countries. In 1990 it became a leased enterprise, in 1992 an open joint-stock company. In 1996 BSC declared bankruptcy, and external management was introduced. In 1999 the bankruptcy case was once again brought up, and bankruptcy proceedings began with the participation of foreign companies. The Sea Port Company uses the BSC brand.
