ROAD OF LIFE, the only transport communication line linking Leningrad to the rest of the country during the Siege of 1941-44. Organized in September 1941, the road passed from Leningrad, through Vsevolozhsk, the Ladozhskoye Ozero (Ladoga Lake) Station and the Osinovets Port, then along Lake Ladoga to Kobona (35 km) and Novaya Ladoga (135 km) by water transport, or, when the lakes were iced over, to Kobona and Voybokalo station by road. Over 1,600,000 tons of cargo were delivered to Leningrad via the Road of Life from September 1941 to March 1943. About 1.376.000 people were evacuated along the road. In the 1960s, a number of monuments were erected along the Road of Life, with 45 memorial mileposts placed between Osinovets and Leningrad. The Road of Life Museum was opened at the Osinovets settlement in the Vsevolozhsky District.
