VAVILOV STATE OPTICAL INSTITUTE, located at 12-14 Birzhevaya Line, is the biggest Russian scientific centre for theoretical and applied research into the sphere of optical information technology, photo technology and basic optical disciplines. It was established in 1918 by academic D. S. Rozhdestvensky and was named after S. I. Vavilov in 1952. Vavilov was a scientific adviser to D. S. Rozhdestvensky. In 1993, it received the status of an All-Russian Scientific Centre. It consists of three filials and several laboratories in St. Petersburg and other cities. The Vavilov State Optical Institute has developed new devices and materials for many industries, including science and medicine, but also military equipment. The domestic optical industry was established under the aegis of the Vavilov State Optical Institute. The institute has published Trudy since 1919 and Optichesky Zhurnal since 1931. There are memorial plaques devoted to its workers Rozhdestvensky, Vavilov, A. N. Terenin, I. V. Grebenshchikov, A. A. Lebedev and V. P. Linnik on the walls. There are also busts of Rozhdestvensky and Vavilov.
