IZMAYLOVSKY LIFE GUARDS REGIMENT, third in seniority (after Preobrazhensky and Semenovsky) of infantry regiments in the Russian guards. Formed by a decree of Empress Anna Ioannovna in 1730 in Moscow, named after the village Izmaylovo in Moscow suburbs - patrimonial estate of the Romanovs. The regiment's sub-divisions participated in the wars with Turkey (1735-39) and Sweden (1741-43 и 1788-90), the regiment itself - in the wars with France 1805, 1806-07, 1812-14 [for distinguished performance in the campaign of 1812 awarded St. George's banner, for the Kulma campaign (1813) - silver St.George's trumpets], and with Turkey (1828-29, 1877-78). Part of the regiment's personnel took part in suppressing the Decembrist revolt on 14.12.1825; Emperor Nicholas I was present in the Senate Square in the regimentals. During WW I of 1914-18 the regiment within the 1st Guards Infantry was dispatched to the South-Western Front. The battalion, which remained in Petrograd for the purpose of reinforcement, took part in the February Revolution of 1917 and in the summer of the same year was deployed into the guards Izmaylovsky Reserve Regiment. In early 1918 both regiments (the main and the reserve) were disbanded. From the autumn of 1731 the regiment was stationed in St. Petersburg, initially quartered in private apartments, from 1736 - in the regimental settlements (sloboda) south from the Fontanka river. The main street of the settlement was later named Izmaylovsky Avenue, side-streets were named according to the numerical designation of its companies (from 1923 - 1st - 13th Krasnoarmeyskie Streets). In the 1798-1810s the Izmaylovsky Quarters Complex was built (architect A.D. Zakharov and L. Rusca). The regimental chapel was the HolyTrinity Cathedral. In 1819-20 Izmalovskie provision stores were built on the site of the former regimental parade grounds. References: Висковатов А. В.
