It was founded as the Petersburg Orthopaedic Institute with the sponsorship of Empress Alexandra Fedorovna in 1906. The institute's first patients were the victims of the terrorists who blew up P. A. Stolypin's dacha on Aptekarsky Island. After merging with the Physical and Surgical Institute in 1924, it was reorganised into the Central State Institute of Traumatology named after R. R Wreden, the first director, in 1934. It was renamed the Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics in 1952 and received its present-day name in 1994. The institute studies issues of traumatology, orthopaedics, corrective surgery, and bone tissue transplantation. A new building situated in Akademika Baykova Street was put into service in 1988. The old building constructed by architect R. F. Meltzer in Petrogradskaya Side is an example of the rationalistic trend in Art Nouveau architecture with an image of Mother and Child on the facade, majolica made by artist K. S. Petrov-Vodkin.
