MAKOVSKY Konstantin Egorovich (1839-1915, Petrograd), painter, V. E. Makovsky's brother. Studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1851-58) under S. K. Zaryanko, completing his studies at the Academy of Arts (1858-62). Academy member (1867) and professor (1869), he became a full member of the Academy of Arts in 1898. In 1863, Makovsky took part in the Revolt of the Fourteen, then joined the Petersburg Association of Painters, and became involved in founding the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions, which he quit in 1883. In his early period, Makovsky was concerned with the theme of the everyman's life in Russian (see Promenade on Admiralty Square in Petersburg, 1869, the State Russian Museum). Later he took up salon-academicism, painting striking portraits (Portrait of the Painter's Wife, 1881; Family Portrait, 1882), and historical scenes (Welcome Ceremony, 1895; Minin on a Square in Nizhny Novgorod, 1896; all of them at the State Russian Museum). In 1909-15, Makovsky lived at 56 First Line of Vasilievsky Island. He was buried at the Nikolskoe Cemetery (tomb unpreserved).
