LAUNDRIES. Commercial establishments for washing, drying and ironing clothes and linen. In the 18th century, laundries were located in private building, and their number could not be calculated. At the spot where the Fontanka River flows out from the Neva there was a Palace Laundry Yard (hence the name of the neighbouring Prachechny (Laundry) Bridge). In the 19th century, apartment houses featured special areas intended for laundry; lodgers lined up in a queue supervised by the yard-keeper. In the garden of the Academy of Arts, there was a drawing room, baths for pupils, and a laundry (1821, architect A.A. Mikhailov). In 1860, a two-story public laundry building was constructed near the Izmailovsky Bridge on the Fontanka River, and featured two sections, one where the washing and ironing was the "clothes-owner's responsibility" (washing was paid for by weight and piece), and one for washing by laundresses. In 1957, 18 laundries operated in Leningrad; by 1990, there were about 70. The City Laundry Trust was located at 3/1 Zodchego Rossi Street. In 2003, some of the laundry-factories operating in St. Petersburg included Laundry No. 1, Nevskaya (107 Sedova Street; 23 pick-up points and a self-service laundry at 63 Yury Gagarin Avenue), and Sphere. There were also over 20 laundries and express laundries, several bath-and-laundry service centres in Kolpino and Kronstadt and a factory in Sestroretsk.
