KIROVSKY DISTRICT is an administrative territorial unit of St. Petersburg. (Its territory administration is located at 18 Stachek Avenue). The district was named in honour of Sergey Kirov in 1934. Its present-day borders were established in 1973. It is located in the south-western part of St. Petersburg. A railway line from Baltiysky Railway Station marks its eastern border with Moskovsky District. In the west, it borders with Krasnoselsky District along Marshal Zhukov Avenue and the Krasnenkaya River. The district reaches the Neva Mouth shore of the Gulf of Finland and includes Gutuevsky, Kanonersky, Bely and other islands. Historical areas of Narvskaya Zastava, Avtovo, Dachnoye, Ulianka, and Ligovo. The area of the district is 43.1 sq.km with the population of 339,500 people (2003). The district has seven municipal divisions: municipal okrugs Nos. 25, 27, 30, 31, Avtovo, Ulianka and Narvsky. Stachek Avenue is the main thoroughfare of the district's development. The territory of the district was the city's suburb until the middle of the 19th century. The city's Narvsky Gates, which gave the territory its name, were located at the crossing of Peterhof Highway and the Tarakanovka River. The construction of Peterhof and Warsaw railways together with the transfer of the commercial port to Gutuevsky Island and construction of postal railways became an economic incentive for the district's development in 1860s. At the beginning of the 20th century the district became workers' outskirts of St. Petersburg with multiple industrial enterprises. Workers mostly lived in uncomfortable wooden houses of villages Volynkina, Emelianovka, Tenteleva, Avtovo, et al. The reconstruction of the district started in 1920s. The first residential district in the city was built in Traktornaya Street in 1925-27. In the 1930s, residential districts were constructed in the quarters along Stachek Avenue. In the beginning of 1920s and the end of 1930s, Gorky Recreational Centre, the House of Technical Education and Kirovsky Supermarket were put up in Stachek Square. The square houses the Kirov District Council and the monument to Kirov. Leningrad's leading defence edge was located here during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, which damaged the buildings. The general built up of Stachek Avenue from the Krasnenkaya River was completed in 1950s. The built up of Avtovo, Dachnoye and Ulianka with mass-produced five-storey apartment block ("Khruschevka") started in 1960s. The first area built that way was the quarter of Krasnoputilovskaya Street. The district houses five metro stations, including Narvskaya, Kirovsky Zavod, Avtovo, Leninsky Prospect, Prospect Veteranov; and the following railway stations: Leninsky Avenue, Dachnoye, Ulianka (along the direction from Baltiysky Railway Station to Lomonosov.) Main thoroughfares of the district include Stachek Avenue going into Peterhof Highway and Narva Federal Motorway, and Marshala Zhukova, Veteranov, Narodnogo Opolcheniya, and Leninsky Avenues. There are about 30 industrial enterprises in the district, including Kirovsky Factory, Severnaya Verf, Kanonersky Shipyard, Krasny Khimik, et al. The commercial port located in the district plays a major role in the city's economy. The district has three higher education institutions: University of Water Communications, Sea Engineering University, and Technological University of Vegetable Polymers. Among cultural establishments are Gorky Recreational Centre, Seamen's Recreational Centre, House of Culture and Technology named after Ivan Gaza. Bely Island houses the Central Aeration Station. There are three large parks: Ekaterinhofsky, Detsky named after January 9, and Alexandrino. Historical and architectural monuments include the Narva Triumphal Gates, Kirovsky Val memorial which is a part of Green Belt of Glory, the mansion of Ekaterina Dashkova Kirianovo, et al.
