Mirovich V. Y. (1740-1764), podporuchik

Categories / Social Life/Personalia

MIROVICH Vasily Yakovlevich (1740-1764, St. Petersburg), a podporuchik (sub-lieutenant) of the Smolenksky Infantry Regiment who did his military service in the garrison of Shliesselburg Fortress where ex-Emperor Ioann VI had been kept as a secret prisoner from 1756. On the night of July 5, 1764, Mirovich instigated soldiers of his guard to arrest the fortress commander and try to set the prisoner free. As the clash between Mirovich's detachment and the prison guard ensued, Captain Vlasiev and Lieutenant Chekin killed Ioann Antonovich following Empress Catherine II's instructions. Mirovich surrendered and was later sentenced to be beheaded. He was executed on September 15, 1764 on the Sytny Market square in St. Petersburg.
