NAVY ENGINEERING INSTITUTE (NEI) (The Major Admiralty) originates from the School of Ship Architecture (1798; renamed the Sea Engineering School in 1898-1919). A new Sea Engineering School opened in 1923, being renamed the Navy Engineering School in 1925, and named after F.E. Dzerzhinsky in 1927. In 1930, it was ranked a "higher educational institution." The institute received its current name in 1998. NEI prepared military engineers for the Navy, specialising in ship fuel (atomic and gas-tube) from the mid-1950s, lifeguard engineering from the 1970s, and engineering-ecology from the early 1980s.
