LERMONTOVSKY AVENUE, running between Dekabristov Street and Obvodny Canal Embankment. Formed in 1912 as part of the joining of Bolshaya Masterskaya Street (from Dekabristov Street to Griboedova Canal), Mogilevskaya Street (from Griboedova Canal to the Fontanka River), and Novo-Petergofsky Avenue (from the Fontanka River to Obvodny Canal). Named after M.Y. Lermontov. The section leading up to the Fontanka River was named First Soldatskaya Street in 1739; in the 1770-90s, it was known as Bolshaya Poperechnaya Street. The architecture along Lermontovsky Avenue originates from the second half of the 19th century. The Grand Choral Synagogue lies at the beginning of Lermontovsky Avenue (building no. 2, 1883-93). Singer N.K. Pechkovsky lived in building no. 4 in 1926-41. Lermontov stayed at his grandmother's in building no. 8/10 (E.A. Arsenyeva). Composer P.I. Tchaikovsky stayed at his parents' in building no. 17 in the 1870s. The 19-storey Sovetskaya Hotel (building no. 43; architects E.A. Levinson, A.I. Pribulsky, V.V. Gankevich) was constructed in 1968-73. The former Narvskaya Department Assembly House is located on Lermontovsky Avenue (building no. 48), and the building is considered an architectural monument to the style of Classicism (1834-37, architects V.I. Beretti, A.E. Shtaubert). In 1906-07, building no. 52 was constructed, housing the former Lermontov City School (architect I.I. Yakovlev). The Podpraporshchiki (Sub-Praporshchik) Guard School and Cavalier Cadets were quartered in building no. 54 since 1839 (in 1864, it was reorganised into the Nikolaevskoe Cavalier School); in 1914-16, a monument to Lermontov (sculptor B.M. Mikeshin), and busts to M.P. Mussorgsky and P.P. Semenov-Tyan-Shansky (lost, recreated in 1989, sculptor A.P. Timchenko) were placed in front of the building. Building no. 57 houses the St. Petersburg Naval Institute.
