ITALYANSKAYA STREET, running from Griboedova Canal to the Fontanka River. Known as Bolshaya Italyanskaya Street from 1871 to 1919, then called Rakova Street until 1991. The street owes its original name to an Italian Palace situated there in the 18th century; and its second name to the commemoration of A.S. Rakov, a member of the revolutionary movement (1885-1919). The street was laid in the first half of the 18th century. Its left side partly borders Iskusstv Square. The street was built up in the mid-19th - early 20th centuries, including house No. 7, one side of the Hotel Europa; house No. 8, the former building of the Mutual Loan Society of the St. Petersburg Provincial Zemstvo (Provincial Government Council) (1893-94, architect A.S.Khrenov); house No. 12, the former Military-Topographic School building (the building's right side, 1905-06, architect I.I. Valberg) and of the Third Military Gymnasia (the building's left side, 1875-77, architect L.A. Vitovsky); house No. 17, the former Gambs Mansion (an earlier structure was rebuilt in 1836, and again in 1856-60, architect L.L. Bonshtedt; added onto in 1890-92, architect Y.Y. Benois), which later belonged to the Central Administration of the Chief Russian Railways Society. House No. 19 includes the Passage department store and the V.F. Komissarzhevskaya Theatre, and house No. 13 the Musical Comedy Theatre. House No. 21 once included M.A. Ratkov-Rozhnov's furnished rooms. The view of Italyanskaya Street is completed by one side of the Countess S.L. Shuvalova Palace, house No. 39/21 (see the Shuvalovs' or Naryshkins' palace).
