ARCHIVES, SAINT PETERSBURG, the Central State Archives of St. Petersburg situated at 15 Varfolomeevskaya Street. They were founded as the Leningrad Regional Archives of the October Revolution in 1936 and renamed as the State Archives of the October Revolution and Socialist Construction of Leningrad Region in 1941-64, Leningrad State Archives of the October Revolution and Socialist Construction in 1964, a name it retained until 1974, to be called the Central State Archives of the October Revolution and Socialist Construction from 1974 to 1991. They received their present-day name in 1991. The archives contained 4,352 files and over 2.8 million cases in 2002. The files of local authorities such as provincial, regional, municipal, and district councils reflect milestones in the development of Leningrad in Soviet times. Materials of the Provisional Government and Executive Committee of Petrograd Soviet cover the events of the February and October revolutions. The events of the Civil War are shown in the documents of the Union of Communes of the Northern Region, Central Commandant's Office of Revolutionary Guards, district commandant's offices of revolutionary guards, defense committees of Petrograd and Northern Region, military departments of Soviets, and regional and district military enlistment offices. Repressions of the early 1930s are covered by material from disfranchising commissions. The history of the city's economic and industrial development is shown in the files of industrial enterprises and local economic authorities such as regional economic councils, Northwestern Industrial Bureau, trusts, planning commissions, financial and statistical institutions. Materials on residential construction, land improvement, and monument conservation are contained in the files of building companies and public utilities. The status of transport and communications in Leningrad and St. Petersburg is defined in the documents of Leningrad Metro, Oktyabrskaya Railway, Baltic Shipping Company, Northwestern River Shipping Company, Glavlenavtotrans (Central Leningrad Motor Transport Company), Tram and Trolleybus Head Office, Central Post Office, and Telegraph Office. The history of culture, education, theatres, museums, and libraries is unfolded in the files of the Commissariat for Education of the Union of Communes of the Northern Region, Representative Office of Higher Education Institutions and Workers' Faculties, Head Office of Scientific Institutions and Institutions of Arts and Sciences, and Commission for the Welfare of Scientists, as well as in questionnaires and autobiographies of scientific and cultural workers kept in the files of Leningrad Commission for Assistance to Scientists. The archives also include files of nearly all higher education institutions of St. Petersburg, many technical schools, and teachers' colleges, as well as provincial, municipal, and district departments of public education. Documents of health departments, sanitary and epidemiological agencies, sanitary statistics bureau, pharmaceutical office, and health resort office describe the structure and development of the health system. Public organisations are represented in the documents of the Northwestern Bureau of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions, regional council of trade unions, regional committees of industrial trade unions, departments and committees of various societies such as the Society of the Former State Convicts and Exiles, Society for Encouraging Links between the City and Country, Voluntary Society for Assistance to Army, Air Force and Navy, Knowledge, Friend of Children, etc. The religious life is covered by the files of Representative Councils of the Russian Orthodox Church and other faiths. The siege of 1941-44 is described in the materials of the Local Air Defense Headquarters and a number of commissions such as the Evacuation Commission, Labour Duty Commission, etc. There is also a set of captured documents describing the occupation regime imposed by Hitlerites in Leningrad Region. Among personal documents are the files of revolutionary D. A. Trilisser, Civil War veteran P. A. Smirnov, historians V. G. Bryunin, G. V. Efimov, and N. A. Kornatovsky, physicians G. A. Ivashentsov and V. V. Stroganov, et al. The archives are situated in special buildings erected in 1972-76.
