SKOROKHOD (33 Zastavskaya Street) is an open joint-stock company, one of the biggest factories of footwear industry. It was founded in 1882 as the factory of the Association Of Mechanical Footwear Production (before 1896 the factory was located at 130 Obvodny Canal Embankment). It produced men's, women's, and children's footwear, including popular light summer shoes – skorokhods - which gave their name to the factory officially named Skorokhod in 1910. By 1914, the volume of production exceeded 2.8 million pairs a year. In the years of the World War I of 1914-18, the factory produced soldiers' boots. In 1918-22 the factory worked with some interruptions, thereafter it was restored and reconstructed. It was here that for the first time in the world the method of hot vulcanization was used in the production of footwear at the end of the 1930s. In 1940, the factory produced over 20 million pairs of shoes of over 100 various types and models. In the years of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 in addition to army boots, the factory produced military equipment and ammunition. After the war Skorokhod again became the leading factory of the branch with a research laboratory (technical innovations developed at Skorokhod Factory later spread to other footwear factories throughout the country). In 1962-91, the factory became a part of the industrial association under the same name, later it was incorporated as a joint-stock company. In 2003, it produced men's, women's, children's shoes, shoes for home, dress footwear, work shoes and special footwear (including footwear for workers of nuclear power plants).
