FOUNDATION FOR THE RENAISSANCE OF ST. PETERSBURG-LENINGRAD (the International Charitable Foundation for the Renaissance of St. Petersburg-Leningrad until 2000) (31 Kirochnaya Street), a non-profit association. It was founded in the fall of 1990 (its Statutes was registered in 1991). The founder and first president of the fund (until 2000) was A.A. Sobchak. Such figures as Z.I. Alferov, M.K. Anikushin, L.N. Gumilev, V.A. Gusev, M.A. Dudin, V.V. Leontyev (USA), D.S. Likhachev, S.P. Merkuryev, A.P. Petrov, T.A. Slavina were also among its founding members. A. D. Margolis has been the Director General of the fund since 1991. The fund aims at integrating Russian and foreign organisations, enterprises, institutions, individual citizens and their intellectual, financial and technical forces for the revival of St. Petersburg as a unique centre of science, culture and business activity. The main programmes of the fund are: Europe - St. Petersburg (examination, restoration and renovation of architectural monuments), Museum (support of museum and archives), Petersburgica (the study of St. Petersburg) (aimed at the development of regional studies), Rostok (Sprout) (assistance to children artists). In 1993 the Social Scientific Council of Experts on Cultural Heritage (ONEKS) was established. The foundation assisted with the restoration works in Peter and Paul Fortress and Tsarskoe Selo, preparation of numerous international conferences and learning workshops, exhibitions and publications, and also in the institution of Antsiferov Award for best works on St. Petersburg (1995).
