Alarchin Bridge

ALARCHIN BRIDGE, across the Griboedov Canal, in alignment with Angliisky (English) Avenue, presumably named after the shipmaster Alarchanin, whose home was located by the bridge. By 1753, a wooden bridge existed at this spot. In 1783-85, a new three span bridge with a wooden superstructure was built (the centre was changed in about 1840 so it could be raised) on the rough stone buttress with granite facing. In 1906-08, on this same foundation metal frames were placed with curved contoured lower girdles (engineer A.P. Pshenitsky, V.A. Bers, A.P. Stanovoy, architect A.I. Zazersky). In 1953, and 1969 the granite lamps that had been lost were replaced (architect А.L. Rotach), in 1995 - the torches were replaced. The length is 35.3 metres, width 15.8 metres.
