STATE HYDROLOGICAL INSTITUTE of the Russian Hydrometeorological Service, situated at 23 Second Line of Vasilievsky Island, the only research institution in Russia studying water resources such as rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and swamps. Founded in 1919, it was handed over to the Hydrometeorological Service of the USSR in 1930. A major contribution to the foundation and development of the institute was made by V. G. Glushkov and V. A. Uryvaev with L. S. Berg, M. A. Velikanov, N. N. Pavlovsky, D. L. Sokolovsky, S. A. Khristianovich, Y. M. Shokalsky, et al., who worked at the institute at various times. Based on institute departments, a number of special institutes were founded. The institute has the Main Experimental Base in the settlement of Ilyichevo near Zelenogorsk and a branch in the town of Valday in Novgorod Region. It is in charge of studying the hydroecological condition of the water system of Lake Ladoga - the Neva - the Neva Bay. It has been publishing its Proceedings since 1936.
