REGIONAL FORTIFICATIONS. (1) Units of the armed forces, including permanent defence constructions on certain territories and troops assigned to defend them. In 1932-39, five Regional Fortifications were deployed in the Leningrad Region along the border with Finland, and two Regional Fortifications in 1940-41. (2) Temporary units during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, formed from machine-gun, artillery and engineering detachments, with the purpose of long-term defence of a certain area or position along the front. Eighteen Regional Fortification units participated in the Battle for Leningrad.
