INTERNAL DEFENCE BELT, a series of defence constructions. Built in spring - autumn 1942, from the Seaport, to Avtovo, to Volodarsky Village, to Kupchino Station, to the left bank of the Neva River (from Volodarskogo Bridge to Finlyandsky Railway Bridge), to Porokhovye, to Rzhevka, to Novaya Village, to Murinsky Stream, to Kolomyagi, to Staraya Derevnya, to the shore of the Gulf of Finland, and up back to the Seaport. Its purpose was to fend off attacks by German and Finnish troops in case they broke through the front line. It was dismantled in 1944-47. Separate Internal Defence Belt buildings have been preserved as monuments (on Y. Gagarin Avenue, on Belgradskaya Street, and others).
