BLACKOUT. Intentional power cuts throughout the city at night during times of war in an effort to prevent aerial attacks. The blackout system was introduced in Leningrad in December 1939, and lasted till March 1940, throughout the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-40; and from 22 June 1941 to 15 April 1945, during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. It included the cutting of power to street lamps, the installation of light-tight curtains on the windows of residential buildings (by occupants), enterprises and various establishments (by employees), and the prohibition of fire or light outside.
