POPOV Markian Mikhailovich (1902-1969), Soviet military commander, General (1953), Hero of the Soviet Union (1965). From 1920 served in the Red Army. Graduated from Pskov Infantry Command Courses (1923), Shot (Vystrel) Training Courses (special training courses for high ranking officers) (1925), Frunze Military Academy (1936). In the middle of the 1920s, Popov headed the regimental school of the 11th Rifle Division in Leningrad, afterwards served in the Far East. From January 1941 was in command of the Leningrad Military District, in July - September 1941, in charge of the North Front and Leningrad Front armies, in November 1941 - October 1942, commander of the 61st and 40th armies, followed by the appointment as Deputy Commander of the Stalingrad Front and the South-Western Front, commanded the 5th Strike Army and the 5th Tank Army, the Reserve Front, troops of the Stepnoy (Steppe) Military District (April - May 1943), Bryansk Front (June - October 1943), Baltic Front and the 2nd Baltic Front (October 1943 - April 1944). From April 1944, Chief of Staff of Leningrad Front, the 2nd Baltic Front and again Leningrad Front. Participated in the defence of Leningrad, Moscow, in the battles for Stalingrad and Kursk, in the liberation of Karelia and the Baltics. Held command positions in the post-war period.
