Chaykovsky B.V. (1888-1924), film director

CHAYKOVSKY Boris Vitalyevich (1888-1924, Leningrad), film director, script writer, and teacher. He worked as a film director and script writer at film companies of A. Drankov, A. Taldykin, A. Khanzhonkov, et al. from 1909. He wrote a number of newspaper and magazine articles on cinema. He edited and published a private newspaper, Kino, in 1918. In the same year, he founded a film-actor studio school that was later reorganised into a state school named after him. He produced about 50 films before 1917 including Romance of the Ballerina; Marionettes of the Fate with E. Bauer as a co-director; Boulevard Slush in 1916; and Sleep, Restless Heart in 1917. After the October of 1917, he shot propaganda and adventure films such as Diplomatic Secret in 1923, In the Rear of the Whites in 1925, and For Life and for Death with P. P. Petrov-Bytov as a co-director in 1925. He was the art director for Adventures of Oktyabrina, G. M. Kozintsev and L. Z. Trauberg's first project, in 1924. He wrote a book, Film Models and Film Actors.
