SHERVUD Leonid Vladimirovich (1871-1954, Leningrad), a sculptor, honoured artistic figure of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (1946). He studied in Moscow till 1891, under V. A. Beklemishev in the Academy of Arts in 1893-98, where he taught from 1918 and under A. Rodin and E. A. Bourdelle in Paris in 1899-1900. The creator of monumental and interior sculptures made in an expressive impressionist style such as the bust of Alexander Pushkin and the portrait of Peter the Great, both made of gypsum in 1902 and 1903, respectively, and kept in the Russian Museum; the headstone of G. I. Uspensky at Literatorskie Mostki, made of bronze in 1904; the monument to Admiral S. O. Makarov, made in 1913 and placed in front of the Naval Cathedral in Kronstadt; and the monument to V. I. Isaev, made in 1913 and placed in the garden of the Kronstadt Naval Hospital. He was in charge of implementing the monumental propaganda plan together with A. V. Lunacharsky in 1918-19. He also sculpted the monumental busts of A. N. Radishchev and A. I. Herzen, the former opened near the Winter Palace in 1918 as the first post-revolution monument, the latter placed near Liteiny Bridge in 1919, both, however, have been destroyed. He strived for monumental simplicity in his last works such as the portrait of P. L. Voykov and the statue of Sentry, both made of gypsum in 1927 and 1933, respectively, and kept in the Russian Museum, and the monument to I. I. Mechnikov made in 1936 and placed near Mechnikov Hospital. He was buried at Literatorskie Mostki.
