YAROSHENKO Nikolay Alexandrovich (1846-1898), painter. Lived in St. Petersburg from the mid-1850s. He graduated from the First Cadet Corps in 1863, the Mikhaylovsky Artillery School in 1865, and the Mikhaylovsky Artillery Academy in 1870. After graduating, he served at the Arsenal, retiring in 1892 with the rank of major-general. From 1867 to 1874, he studied art as an irregular student of the Academy of Arts and under I.N. Kramskoy. In 1876, he entered the co-operative Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions, to become one of its ideological leaders from the late 1880s. Yaroshenko painted social genre paintings along with type-portraits where he embodied the democratic ideals of his time. These include A Stoker (1878), A Prisoner (1878), A Student (1881), Life Everywhere (1888, all of them reposited in the State Tretyakov Gallery), The Old and the Young (1881, State Russian Museum). His works also include portraits of his prominent contemporaries: I.N. Kramskoy (1876), N.N. Ge (1890), Leo N. Tolstoy (1894, all of them reposited in the State Russian Museum), actress P.A. Strepetova (1884, State Tretyakov Gallery) etc. In addition to that, he painted landscapes, such as: Nevsky Prospect at Night, 1874; the canvas perished during the Great Patriotic War). In 1874-79, he lived at 24 Znamenskaya Street (present-day Vosstaniya Street), and moved to 63 Sergievskaya Street (now Chaykovskogo Street) in 1879.
