LOSENKO Anton Pavlovich (1737 - 1779, St. Petersburg) artist. He lived in St. Petersburg from 1744. He was trained at the workshop of I. P. Argunov from 1753 to 1758 and at the Academy of Arts from 1758 to 1760. He was sent to Paris, where he lived from 1760 to 65, and to Rome, from 1766 to 1769, as a retainer of the Academy of Arts. He was a professor and a member of the Academy of Arts from 1770 and a director of the Academy from 1772. He was one of the founders of the historical genre in Russian art and was the first to turn to the theme of national history, with Vladimir and Rogneda, 1770, exhibited in the State Russian Museum. He played a leading role in the development of the Russian classicism, treating historical and mythological genres in the spirit of citizenship and patriotism (Farewell of Hector and Andromache, 1773, held at the State Tretyakov Gallery. He executed portraits of A. P. Sumarokov, 1760, the President of the Academy of Arts I. I. Shuvalov, 1760, the actors Y. D. Shumsky, 1760, and F. G. Volkov, 1763, all of which are now housed in in the State Russian Museum). He compiled a text for the Academy of Arts, An Explanation of the Short Proportions of Man (1772). He was buried in the Cemetery near Holy Annunciation Church (18-20 Maly Avenue of Vasilievsky Island; the cemetery and the tombstone has not survived).
