Kulbin N.I. (1868-1917), Artist

KULBIN Nikolay Ivanovich (1868, St. Petersburg - 1917, Petrograd) painter, graphic artist, art theorist; actual privy counsellor (1915), lecturer at the Army Medical College (from 1907), a doctor of the General Staff (from 1903). He inspired and arranged exhibitions, public debates and publications of the literary and artistic avant-guard. He wrote manifestos and theoretical articles dealing with problems of art. He received no special artistic education; was influenced by various contemporary artistic trends - symbolism, impressionism, cubism etc. He organised the artistic and psychological group the Triangle in 1908. He was a co-founder of the artistic cabaret Stray Dog (1912). He wrote a number of research works in the field of medicine. He lived at 9 Syezzhinskaya Street (1909-12), 16 Maximilianovsky Lane (1913-14) and in 17 Maximilianovsky Lane (1914-17). He was buried in Mitrofanyevskoe Cemetery (the tombstone has not survived).
