BRYULLOV Karl Pavlovich (1799, St. Petersburg - 1852), painter. A. P. Bryullov’s brother. He studied under A. I. Ivanov, A. E. Egorov, and V. K. Shebuev in the Academy of Arts in 1809-21. He was a retainer of the Society for Encouragement of the Arts in Italy from 1823 to 1835. He lived in the building of the Academy of Arts at 17 Universitetskaya Embankment in 1836-35; a memorial plaque was placed on a wall of the conference hall. He was an honorary associate of the Academy of Arts from 1834 and a professor from 1836 to 1849. He introduced romantic pathos and bright emotions into the Russian classicism, he achieved man’s sensual beauty in a number of his works, such as Italian Midday, painted in 1827 and exhibited in the State Russian Museum, and Virsavia, painted in 1832 and exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery. The large-scale historical Last Day of Pompeii is Bryullov’s most prominent work, painted in 1830-33 and exhibited in the State Russian Museum, which was displayed in the hall of the Academy of Arts, St. Petersburg, in 1834 which became a notable social event. The author of lyric and psychological portraits of his contemporaries, such as N. V. Kukolnik, I. P. Vitali, I. A. Krylov, and A. N. Strugovshchikov, painted in 1836, circa 1837, 1839, and 1840, respectively, all of them exhibited in the State Tretyakov Museum, he was also a master of ceremonial portraits, including Horsewoman, a portrait of G. Paccini painted in 1832 and exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery and Portrait of Y. P. Samoylova Leaving the Ball painted circa 1842 and exhibited in the State Russian Museum. He created a number of canvases for St. Isaac’s Cathedral and Kazan Cathedral in 1843-47. He lived in Italy from 1850.
