ST. PETERSBURG ASSOCIATION OF ARTISTS (Artists' Club in 1863-64) was the first union of Petersburg artists established in 1863 by professors and students of the Academy of Arts to bring artists together. The Association united up to 400 members, including painters and architects Vasily Vasilyev, Ivan Vaulin, Vasily Vereshchagin, Vasily Demut-Malinovsky, Firs Zhuravlev, Iosif Krachkovsky, Lev Lagorio, Karl Lemokh, Dmitry Martynov, Arseny Meshchersky, V.M. Ryazanov, and Konstantin Ton; writers Peter Boborykin and Vasily Kurochkin; and composer Mily Balakirev. The Association functioned as a club: it held chamber exhibitions, amateur performances, lections, musical events. The Association funded a free drawing school for the poor and grants to students of the Conservatory. It put up a monument to Vasily Kurochkin at the Volkovskoe cemetery. It was located on Troitskaya Street in the house of Maria Ruadze (today 13 Rubinsteina Street). The Association existed until 1879.
