PETERBURGSKY SBORNIK (Petersburg Collection), published by N. Nekrasov (St. Petersburg, 1846). Among others it included works by V. G. Belinsky, Iskander (pseudonym of A. I. Herzen), V. F. Odoevsky, N. A. Nekrasov, F. M. Dostoevsky, I. I. Panaev, V. А. Sollogub, А. N. Maykov. The release of the journal's first issue with Nekrasov's poem The Lullaby unleashed a storm from the censor. In The Lullaby the infant was foretold a brilliant bureaucrat's career where the bureaucrat was a scoundrel with a rotten soul. This publication within the official circles had earned Nekrasov the reputation of a disloyal writer. In his critical review of the Peterburgsky Sbornik F. V. Bulgarin called the authors striving to confine to Gogol's literary principles the natural school. Belinsky picked up the name imparting a positive connotation to it and juxtaposed the natural school to the 'false, rhetoric. Of conceptual significance for the natural school was Dostoevsky's novel The Poor Folk, published in the Peterburgsky Sbornik, where he, as Belinsky put it, made the first endeavour in the Russian literature to create a social novel. Dostoevsky's innovation is also revealed in the way he gave an insight into the inner world of the poor Petersburg clerk and not just portrayed him (М. М. Bakhtin). Belinsky in his article Thoughts and Notes on the Russian Literature presented the ideological and aesthetic program of the collection, in particular and that of the school, later known as the naturalist school. The collection also published duplicated ornaments (imprints of woodcut engravings) and engravings by painters А. А. Agin, V. F. Timm, Е. I. Kovrigin, R. K. Zhukovsky and engravers Е. Е. Bernadsky and А. Е. Maslov.
