RUSSKY INVALID (The Russian Invalid), a newspaper (in 1816-42 Russky Invalid, ili Voennye Vedomosti. The paper was founded in 1813 by civil servant P. P. Pezarovius (editor in 1813-15 and 1840-47) as a private charity publication (the entire revenue was spent on financial aid for the disabled, soldiers' widows and orphans). In 1813 the paper appeared as a daily, in 1814-15 - two-three times a week (with the appendixes - on a more frequent basis), from 1816 again as a daily (and in 1869 - three times a week). Until 1822 the periodical was also published in German (in 1817-21 and in Polish). Members of the Emperor's Family were among its first subscribers; and A. K. Vostokov became its first staff translator. In 1816 the newspaper changed hands and became subject to the authority of the Committee of 18 August 1814 (later the Alexander Committee for the Relief of the Wounded); from 1862 was in operation as the official newspaper of the Military Ministry; from 1869 appeared under a joint editorship along with the monthly Voenny Sbornik. Throughout its history the paper was edited by А. F. Voeykov, Prince N. S. Golitsin, P. S. Lebedev, N. G. Pisarevsky, D. I. Romanovsky, А. I. Lavrentyev, N. A. Lachinov et al. The editorial office at various times was located at: 28 Nevsky Prospect (has not survived), 28 Shpalernaya Street and a number of other places. The newspaper published reports of military operations, orders and decrees for the military department and other official information. The Russky Invalid supplement the Sovremennoe Slovo newspaper (edited by N. G. Pisarevsky), circulating in 1862, was clearly of liberal orientation. The paper also issued literary supplements the Novosti Literatury (1822-26), Literaturnye pribavleniya (1831-39), Literaturnaya Gazeta (1840-49). From July of 1917 was in circulation rebranded as Armiya i Flot Svobodnoy Rossii and after October 1917 was closed.
