PLETNEV Peter Alexandrovich (1791-1865), critic, poet, publisher, pedagogue, privy councillor (1856), member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1841). In 1819 became a member of the Free Society for the Friends of the Russian Philology. From 1810 resided in St. Petersburg. Graduated from the Central Pedagogical Institute (1814). From 1814-29 was active as a teacher of the Russian language and literature, from 1829-39 as an academic inspector in various gymnasiums and schools; professor of Russian philology (1832-49), vice chancellor (1840-61) of the Petersburg University. From 1828 he taught literature to the heir, future Emperor Alexander II, and Grand Princesses. Contributed as a staff writer for the Severnye Tsvety almanac. Pletnev was one of the leading critics within the Pushkin circle in the 1820s. In memory of А. А. Delwig hosted literary Wednesdays. Pletnev was actively engaged in Gogol's and Pushkin's publishing activities (who dedicated his novel Evgeny Onegin to him). He was also the publisher of the Sovremennik (1838-46) and Pushkin's manuscripts. He lived at Obukhovsky Avenue (presently 8 Moskovsky Avenue), 38 Nevsky Prospect, in the Rektorsky Fligel of the Petersburg University (presently 9 University Embankment). Buried at Tikhvinskoe cemetery of Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
