BULGARIN Faddei Venediktovich (Tadeush) (1789-1859), journalist, prose writer, critic, publisher, Actual Civil Councillor (1857). Graduated from the Polish Gentry Infantry Cadet Corps (School for the Nobility) (1806), served in the Cavalry Guards, took part in the Russo-Prusso-French war of 1806-07. In 1811-14 served in Napoleon's Grand Army. Permanently resided in St. Petersburg from 1819 to 57. In 1826-31 acted as a special commissioner to the Ministry of People's Education. Bulgarin was one of the first writers with a professor's title (following Emperor Nicholas I's expression the King of Gostiny Dvor), publisher of the Severny arkhiv journal (1822-29) and Syn Otechestva journal (jointly with N. I. Grech). In 1825 published the first national theatrical almanac Russkaya Taliya, where he inserted excerpts from A. S. Griboedov's Woe from Wit. Bulgarin gained prominence as a publishing editor of Russia's first private political and literary newspaper Severnaia pchela. In literary disputes harshly criticise writers belonging to Pushkin's circle; a pejorative phrased coined by Bulgarin natural school gave the name to the realistic trend in literature of the 1840s. He wrote within the moral narrative genre (novel Ivan Vyzhigin, 1829 and other). An insight into the lifestyle of the masses is given in the stories from the collection Essays on Russian Morals (1843). Became notoriously famous due to collaboration with the Third Department of His Imperial Majesty's Chancellery. In different periods lived at 18 Nevsky Prospect, 3 Ofitserskaya Street (presently Dekabristov Street), 4 Pochtamtskaya Street, 22 Tsarskoselsky (presently Moskovsky) Avenue.
