Pahlen von der P.A. governor-general in 1797-1801

Pahlen (v. der Pahlen) Peter Alexeevich (Peter Ludwig) (1745-1826), count (1799), statesman and a military figure, Cavalry General (1798). Since 1760 had been attending military service; took part in the Seven-year war of 1756-63, the Russo-Turkish wars of 1768-74 and 1787-91. In 1792-95 the governor of Riga vicegerency, in 1795-97 Courland governor-general. In 1798-01 the governor-general of St. Petersburg; during his administration Medical Surgical Academy (1798), St. Catherine school (1798), Alexandrovskaya Cotton-spinning Manufacture (1798) were established; as well as the buildings of Naval Cadet Corps school (1798) and Mikhaylovsky castle (1800) were erected, the building of Kazan Cathedral (1801) had started. Pahlen was one of the heads of the conspiracy against emperor Paul I. He had been retired since 1801.
