IGNATIEV Pavel Nikolaevich (1797-1879, St. Petersburg), count (1877), statesman, infantry general (1859), adjutant-general (1846), honorary member of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1856). After graduating from Moscow university (1814) he served in the Guards; on the day of Decembrists riot (December 14, 1825) he guarded Winter Palace with the company of Preobrazhensky regiment, owing to which he was awarded by the rank of aide-de-camp. A participant of the Russo-Turkish war of 1828-29. In 1834-46 the head master of the Page Corps school, at the same time in 1842-43 the director of military educational institutions management staff. Since 1848, the curator of Medical Surgical Academy (in 1850 he was elected honorary member). Since 1852 Ignatiev had been a member of State council. In 1854-61 he was appointed Petersburg governor-general, at the same time in 1859-61 a chairman of the board of trustees of the public assistance establishments in St. Petersburg. At the time of students' disturbances in the fall of 1861 he showed himself an advocate of drastic measures "when he ordered to bring troops and police forces into the university and execute mass arrests of "troublemakers"; this action did nothing but aggravate the situation and brought about his dismissal. Since 1864 he had been a chairman of Petition acceptance commission. In 1872 he headed the Commission on the 200th anniversary celebration of emperor Peter the Great. Since 1872, the chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers. The Fellow of the Imperial Philantropic society (since 1856). Ignatiev was buried in the crypt of St. Sergius Сhurch in Troitse-Serghieva Hermitage (the tomb not preserved).
