KOLPINSKY DISTRICT, an administrative and territorial unit of Saint Petersburg (with the territorial administration situated in Kolpino, at 1 Uritskogo Street). The name derives from the town of Kolpino which is the centre of the district. From 1954 the district exists within its present boundaries. Located in the far southeast of St. Petersburg, it borders in the north on Nevsky District and Frunzensky District, in the west - with Pushkinsky District, in the south - with Tosnensky District and Kirovsky District of Leningrad Region. In the northeast the district is bound by the Neva River whose coastline within Kolpinsky District territory is as long as 20 kilometres. The district territory is crossed by the Izhora River flowing into the Neva and the former's estuary Bolshaya Izhorka River. As for 2003 the district area totalled 105.8 square kilometres and the population was 176,500 inhabitants. The district encompasses six municipal formations: the town of Kolpino, Metallostroy settlement, Pontonny settlement, Saperny settlement, Ust-Izhora settlement, Petro-Slavyanka settlement. From the 13th century the district territory was incorporated within Izhorsky Pogost (the centre of a rural community during the Novgorod Period) of Votic Fifth (domain, an administrative and territorial unit of the Novgorodian State) of Great Novgorod. The Nevskaya Battle (the Battle of Neva) took place at the estuary of the Izhora River in 1240. In the early 18th century, following the decree of Tsar Peter the Great saw-mills were built on the Izhora River banks. In 1722 Izhora works were founded giving rise to the settlement of Kolpino (in 1912 it became a town). The district territory is traversed by railway lines from Moskovsky Railway Station to Moscow (including Slavyanka, Metallostroy, Izhorsky Zavod, Kolpino stations) and to Volkhovstroy (with Izhory, Pontonnaya, Sapernaya, 29th kilometer stations). Petrozavodskoe Avenue is the district's major expressway. Kolpinsky District accommodates more than 30 industrial enterprises including Izhorskie Works, Efremov Scientific Research Institute of Electrophysical Equipment, Sredne-Nevsky Shipbuilding Plant, Voenokhot Plant, Kolpino Food Industrial Complex, and construction industry enterprises: Ust-Izhora Plywood Manufacturing Plant, Kolpino Construction Materials Plant, Pobeda-Knauf, Stroypolimer and others. The historical legacy is conserved in the monuments and architectural objects: The Neva Battle (1240) Site, an obelisk to marine volunteers of the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-90, The Green Belt of Glory memorial, Izhorsky Ram, a memorial ensemble at Balkanskoe Cemetery.
