KALININ Mikhail Ivanovich (1875-1946), Soviet statesman, Hero of Socialist Labor (1944). He graduated from State elementary training school (1886). In 1889 arrived at St. Petersburg, worked as a lackey, in 1893 entered Old Arsenal factory (3/21 Liteyny Avenue, memorial plaque). Since 1895 he had worked as a turner at Putilov factory, was at the head of workers' circle closely related to St. Petersburg The working class liberation struggle union. In 1899 he was arrested and deported to Tiflis after 10-months imprisonment. In 1905 he came back to St. Petersburg illegally, became a member of Narvsky district committee of Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party, was at the head of the Bolshevist organization at Putilov factory (memorial plaque). In 1906 Kalinin was elected a member of Petersburg Committee of Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party. Since 1906 he had been working at Pipe factory. In 1908 moved to Moscow. In 1911 came back to St. Petersburg, worked as a gauger at artillery plant (3/14 Liteiny Avenue, memorial plaque), again became a member of Petersburg Committee of Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party, headed the party organization of Vyborgsky district. In 1912 he was elected a candidate member of the Central Committee and entered the staff of Russian Bureau of the Central Committee of Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party. In 1913-16 he worked at Aivaz factory (nowadays 25 Engelsa Avenue, memorial plaque). In 1917 Kalinin belonged to Pravda newspaper editorial board. Since September of 1917 he was the ostensible member of the Central City Council and a chairman of Lesnovsko-Udelnenskaya district administrative board (13 Bolotnaya Street, memorial plaque), after October of 1917 he was appointed Petrograd mayor (33 Nevsky Prospect, memorial plaque). Since December of 1917 he was a member of Foodstuff People's commissariat board. Kalinin was elected a Petrograd deputy of the Constituent Assembly. In August of 1918 - March of 1919 he was a commissar of municipal service of Association of local authorities of the Northern region. Later on he worked in Moscow; in 1919-38 he was a chairman of All-Russian Central Executive Committee, since 1938 had been a chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, belonged to the immediate political surrounding of I.V. Stalin, practically sanctioned mass repressions of the 1920-40s. For the last time he visited Leningrad in January of 1945, on the occasion of the city presentation with Order of Lenin. In 1889-96 Kalinin lived in 7 Solyanoy Lane (present-day 12 Gangutskaya Street,memorial plaque). In St. Petersburg the name of Kalinin was given to a district of the city (1946), a square (1955; the monument to Kalinin has been put on it since 1955, sculptor M.G. Manizer, architects A.K. Barutchev, Y.O. Rubanchik), a street (1924), a plant (1923). The monument to Kalinin has been also set on Bolshaya Zelenina st. (1947, sculptor N.V. Tomsky).
