Nevskaya Strike (1870)

Categories / Social Life

NEVSKAYA STRIKE (1870),a workers' strike at the Nevskaya Cotton Manufactory (today it is part of the Kirov Spinning-Filar Industrial Complex). One of the first economic strikes in Russia, it was started on 22 May with a demand by 63 spinners for a pay rise, which was supported by other workers (800 people). It was distinguished by its orderliness and solidarity; workers chose five representatives for talks with the Director and Chief of Police F.F. Trepov. Over 60 participants of the Nevskaya Strike were arrested and sentenced to several days of confinement by the Petersburg District Court, and the government issued an administrative order to exile the ringleaders from St. Petersburg. Later, such practice was widely used by the government in fighting the labour movement. The Ministry of Internal Affairs published a secret decree on 6 July 1870 enabling governor-generals to exile heads of strikes without the need for court sentencing.
