Peter II (1715-1730), Emperor

Categories / Capital/Personalia

Peter II (1715-1730), Emperor (from 1727). Grandson of Emperor Peter the Great, son of Tsarevich Alexey Petrovich. He took the crown thanks to the interests of A.D. Menshikov, who wanted to be the young Emperor's regent and planned to marry him to his daughter. In 1727, Peter II removed Menshikov from power and exiled him, becoming an independent monarch. In 1728, he went to Moscow for his coronation, and, becoming obsessed with hunting in the Moscow region, practically moved the capital from St. Petersburg to Moscow, where he died of smallpox. He was the only Russian emperor to be buried in Moscow. In St. Petersburg, he mainly stayed at Menshikov's Palace and the Prince A.G. Dolgoruky's Palace. Construction on his own palace (11 Universitetskaya Embankment) had only begun at the time of his death.
