IMPERIAL RESIDENCES, palaces, the official abodes of the Emperors, the Imperial Court, recognized by law as such; property of the Treasury and maintained at the expense of the State Treasury House. The place of court ceremonies. The Winter House was Tsar Peter the Great's first residence (1711-12, the so called Second Winter Palace). Over the following years, other Winter Palaces became Imperial residences, including the present-day Winter Palace (from 1762), as well as the Big Palace in Peterhof and the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoe Selo. All other palaces were private property of the Emperor, members of His family (palaces of Gatchina, Anichkov Palace), or members of the Imperial Family (Pavlovsk, Strelna, Oranienbaum), and were passed on be inheritance.
