REPINA SQUARE (in the middle of the 19th century - Kalinkinskaya Square), between Rimskogo-Korsakova Avenue and embankments of the Fontanka River and Griboedova Canal. The first name was given after Kalinkin building located on the left bank of the Fontanka River in the early 18th century. In 1952, it was renamed after artist I.E. Repin. The square was developed to the plan approved by St. Petersburg Construction Commission in 1737, and was the largest of bridgehead squares of the Fontanka River. Building 1 is the former assembly house of Kolomenskaya Department (1849-51, architect R.A. Zhelyazevich). Repin lived and worked in building 3/5 in 1882-95; he was frequently visited by artist V.A. Serov. In the centre of the square, there is a small public garden commissioned by merchant G.M. Landrin and created in the second half of the 19th century. In 1917, building 1 housed the committee of the Union of Working Youth. On Repina Square, there is a milestone, installed in 1772.
